At Lewis, we strive to adapt to current realities and to sustain our commitment to student safety. In response to two separate incidents involving students and moving vehicles in our community, we are taking the following actions:

  • Adjusting staff supervision to increase adult presence outside the school, at arrival and dismissal.
  • Engaging students in conversation about pedestrian safety in upcoming Friday advisory circle.
  • Advocating, with construction manager and school police, to have a crosswalk installed in front of the main office.
  • Inviting parents (like you!) to join a "Parent Patrol." We are inviting adult volunteers to act as crossing guards at intersections surrounding our school. You can volunteer if you have one 15-30 minute time, which you are able to commit in an ongoing capacity. Sign up HERE if you are able to commit.

Student safety depends on each of us, and all of us. To that end, I want to emphasize some expectations that we have for you, the parents and guardians, at arrival and dismissal:

Pull your car over before dropping off or picking students up.

Right now, too many drivers are releasing students and welcoming them into vehicles while in a lane of traffic.

Follow all traffic laws.

Drivers should not be pulling "u-turns" in front of our school to avoid traffic. Drivers are not permitted to stop in a lane of traffic. Vehicle speeds should be low near our school.

Model the behaviors we want our students to take.

Thank you for partnering with us to keep all of our students safe.
